My Favourite Book

A book is not simply a collection of papers, it is a good friend, which can teach us, mould us and capable of lightning the spark inside us towards destiny. One such book that left a huge impact on me is “The story of my experiments with truth”-The autobiography of Gandhiji  (Satya sothanai in tamil, I have read the tamil version).

I read it on the way towards my native Madurai and in return too without wasting any time. The very thought of reading about the leader whom I admire the most kept me centered towards the book. I have never read any book this way, not even for my public examinations. The book really made a life changing impact on me.

Initially I thought the book is all about his political accomplishments, but when I started turning pages I discovered that it is completely about his personal life and about the experiments he conducted within himself.

Most of us know Gandhiji only as a freedom fighter, but this book showcased his various faces. Out of which I am sharing a few drops from the ocean, Gandhi. 

• Self control: “One who controls himself can control the whole world”. A perfect example to this saying is Gandhiji. There were numerous instances where his self control was portrayed. Either it is keeping to the promise he made to his mother before leaving to London or his self imposed diet restrictions, I witnessed how good he was in controlling his senses.

• Self Belief: “Believe in yourself, the world will believe you”. Gandhi showcased himself as a living example for this saying. The self belief he had in non violence brought him victory in South Africa and that made every Indian to stand behind him against the whites. Gandhiji believed sand therapy is the best treatment for plague. He opted to continue with sand therapy for his son who was heavily infected with plague. His self belief not only saved his son’s life but also saved the lives of many soldiers during the South African war.

• Admitting our fault: “No individual is 100% perfect”, Gandhi was no exception. He himself pointed out numerous flaws he made in his life. The openness to share his blameworthy behavior to the world which is praising him as Mahatma made him stand tall in my mind. He is a real hero.

• Patience: Patience is a key to turn any situation in our way. I learnt it from the patience he showed in South Africa where he was racially discriminated. 

Apart from these characteristics, I admired the way he practiced brahmacharya, the respect he renders to everyone, his selfless attitude, his devotion to God and a lot more....

The book made me realize the value of all these attributes. It pushed me to follow his traits.

There are many books which we read to pass time or to have fun. “The story of my experiments with truth” is certainly not of that kind. I would term the time I spent on reading the book as Invaluable. I had a feeling of fulfillment when I was on the last page of his Autobiography. That’s what made this book as my all time favorite.

Do read this book when you get a chance. Be ready to feel the difference inside you while reading :)

தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு

இன்று சித்திரை முதல் நாள். தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு!!!!

தமிழர்கள் அனைவரும் கொண்டாட வேண்டிய இந்த நன்னாள் தற்பொழுது அரசியல்வாதிகளால் பந்தாடப்பட்டு வருகிறது. தை முதல் நாளை சூரியனும், சித்திரை முதல் நாளை இலையும் புத்தாண்டு என்று கூற, எப்படி புத்தாண்டை கொண்டாடலாம் என்று யோசிப்பதற்கு பதிலாய் எது புத்தாண்டு என்று யோசிக்கிறோம்.

சித்திரை முதல் நாளை ஏன் புத்தாண்டாக கொண்டாடுகிறோம் என்று ஆராய்ந்ததால் இந்த குழப்பத்திற்கு விடை கிடைத்ததோடு உலகின் மற்ற புத்தாண்டை விட சித்திரை புத்தாண்டே சிறப்பு வாய்ந்தது என்று என்னால் அறிய முடிந்தது.

சித்திரை புத்தாண்டின் சிறப்புகள்:

• தமிழ் ஆண்டுகள் எண்களால் குறிக்கப்படாமல் பெயர்களால்  குரிக்கபடுகிறது.

• பிரபவ ஆண்டில் தொடங்கி அட்சய ஆண்டு வரை தமிழில் மொத்தம் 60 ஆண்டுகள் உள்ளன.

• அட்சய ஆண்டின் முடிவில் இந்த 60 ஆண்டுகளும் முதலில் இருந்து சுழற்சியாக தொடர்கின்றன.

• ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டிற்கும் ஒரு பஞ்சாங்கம் உள்ளது. பஞ்சாங்கம் என்பது ஜோசியம் பார்பதற்கு மட்டுமன்று. சந்திர கிரஹனம், சூர்ய கிரஹனம் மற்றும் ஒவ்வொரு விண்வெளி அசைவும் அதிலே துல்லியமாக நேரத்தோடு கணிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.


• இதில் வியக்கதக்க விஷயம் என்னவெனில் இந்த 60 பஞ்சாங்கங்களே ஒவ்வொரு சுழற்சியிலும் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. அதாவது சித்திரை முதல் நாள் நந்தன ஆண்டன்று ஒரு சந்திர கிரஹனம் நடந்தால், 60 ஆண்டிற்குப்பிறகு அடுத்த சுழற்சியில் சித்திரை முதல் நாள் நந்தன ஆண்டன்று அதே நேரத்தில் சந்திர கிரஹனம் நடக்கும்.


• இவ்வாறு விண்வெளியின் ஒவ்வொரு நிகழ்வும் 60 ஆண்டு இடைவெளியில் வரிசை மாறாமல் நிகழ்கிறது என்பதை நம் முண்ணோர்கள் எந்த வித நவீன கருவிகளும் இன்றி கண்டுபிடித்து, அதன் அடிப்படையில் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டிற்கும் பெயர் சூட்டியுள்ளனர். இந்த 60 ஆண்டுகளும் சித்திரை முதல் நாளான இன்றே தொடங்குகிறது. (இன்று கர ஆண்டு முடிந்து நந்தன ஆண்டு உதயமாகின்றது).

இப்படி பல சிறப்புக்கள் கொண்ட சித்திரை முதல் நாளை புத்தாண்டாக கொண்டாடுவதில் பெருமை கொள்வோம்.

இன்று பிறக்கும் நந்தன ஆண்டு இனிய ஆண்டாக அமைய வாழ்த்துக்கள்.

குருவிக் கதை

நம்ம எல்லாருக்கும் சின்ன வயசுல நம்ம பாட்டி பல கதை சொல்லி இருப்பாங்க. அதை இப்போ நெனச்சு பாத்தால் ஒரே வேடிக்கையா இருக்கும். அந்த மாதிரி ஒரு வேடிக்கை கதை தான் என் பாட்டி எனக்கு பல தரவை சொன்ன இந்த குருவி கதை(No logic, only Magic). இப்போ கதைக்கு போகலாம்

ஒரு ஊருல ஒரு குருவி இருந்துச்சாம் (As usual).

வேலை வெட்டி இல்லாத அந்த குருவி ஒரு நாள் தெரு ஓரமா இருந்த குப்பையை  கிளருச்சாம் (hero introduction).

குப்பையை கிளருன குருவிக்கு ஒரு நெல்மணி கிடைச்சதாம் (story starting).

கையில் கிடைச்ச நெல்லை குத்தி குத்தி அரிசி ஆக்குச்சாம். அரிசிய குத்தி குத்தி குருணை  ஆக்குச்சாம்(Characterization: Hard working hero).

அரிசியை குத்தி குத்தி களைச்சுப்போன குருவி அந்த குருணையை எடுத்துகிட்டு ஒரு பாட்டி கிட்ட போய்,  "பாட்டி பாட்டி எனக்கு இதை வச்சு ஒரு பாயாசம் பண்ணிக்குடு" அப்டின்னு சொல்லுச்சாம் (kuruvi epdi paesum nu kaeka koodathu).

சோர்ந்துபோய் இருந்த அந்த குருவிய பாத்த பாட்டிக்கு ஒரே பாவமா இருந்துச்சாம். அதனால அந்த பாட்டி "போயிட்டு சாயங்காலம் வா, பண்ணி வைக்கறேன்" னு சொல்லி அனுப்பி வைச்சாங்களாம்(Sentiment!!!).

சாயங்காலம் திரும்பி வந்த குருவி, பாட்டி பாயசம் பண்ணி வைச்சிருக்கறதை பாத்ததும் ரொம்ப ரொம்ம்ம்ம்ம்ம்ம்ப சந்தோஷப்பட்டுச்சாம்(Apdiyae cut panni, oru foreign song podungappa. Ithellam sollanuma enna).

நம்ம பாட்டிக்கு Thanks சொல்லிட்டு பாயாசத்த தூக்கு சட்டியோட தூக்கிட்டு  குளத்தாங்கரைக்கு பறந்து போயிருச்சாம்(vidaa muyarchi, viswarooba vetri!!!).

கரைல வச்சி மூடிய திறந்தவுடனே வாசனை அப்டியே மூக்க துளைக்க!!!, சுட்டு பொசுக்கர பாயாசத்த குடிக்க கபக்னு தலைய தூக்குக்குள்ள விட்டு மடக்னு குடிச்சதும், சூடு தாங்காம பாத்திரத்தை தட்டிவிட்டு பாயாசமெல்லாம் குளத்துல கொட்டிருச்சாம்(Aiyo paavam).

குருவிக்கு பாவம் வாயெல்லாம் பொத்து போச்சு. பாயாசம் கொட்டிருச்சேனனு ரொம்ப வருத்த பட்டுச்சு :(. (Thenpandi cheemaiyilae song backgroundla podunga)

சரி, தண்ணியாச்சும் குடிக்கலாம் அப்டின்னு சொல்லி குளத்து தண்ணிய குடிச்சா, தண்ணி பாயாசம் மாதிரி தித்தித்ததாம். குருவிக்கு ஒரே சந்தோசம். குளத்து தண்ணிய பாயாசம்னு நெனச்ச குருவி, வைக்கோலை எடுத்து பின்னால சொரிகிட்டு எல்லா தண்ணியும் குடிச்சு பெரிய பூதம் மாதிரி ஆகிருச்சு(Second half la, herovin asura valarchi).

ஆடி ஆடி கஷ்டபட்டு நடந்து வர குருவிய பாத்து, அங்க மேஞ்சிகிட்டு இருந்த குதிரை சிரிக்கவும் கோபத்துல அந்த குதிரைய முழுங்கிருச்சாம்.(Singam ondru purapattathae song ippo podunga)

திருவாரூர் தேர் மாதிரி அசஞ்சு வர குருவிய எதிர்ல வர யானை கிண்டல் பண்ண, அந்த யானைய முழுங்கி இன்னும் பெருசா ஆயிருச்சு.(evana irunthaalum vettuvaen, evana irunthaalum vettuvaen)

அப்டியே நடந்து வந்த குருவிக்கு தூக்கம் கண்ணை கட்ட, பாட்டி கிட்ட போய் தூங்க இடம் கேட்டுச்சாம். "வீட்லலாம் இடம் இல்ல, போய் மாட்டு கொட்டாய்ல படு"ன்னு பாட்டி சொன்னதால மாட்டு கொட்டாய்ல படுத்து கொர் கொர் ன்னு கொரட்ட விட்டு தூங்கிருச்சாம். (Inga than kathaila twist vaikarom.....)

அங்க இருந்த மாடு, குருவி பின்னால வைக்கோலை பாத்ததும், சாப்பிட அதை இழுத்துச்சாம். அவ்ளோதான், குருவிக்கு உள்ள இருந்த தண்ணியெல்லாம் வெளிய கொட்டி வீடே குளம் மாதிரி ஆயிருச்சாம். உள்ள போன யானை, குதிரை எல்லாம் அந்த தண்ணில நீச்சல் அடிச்சி வெளிய வர, நம்ம குருவி சின்னதாகி பறந்து போயிருச்சாம்! (Happy ending)!!!!!!!!

இப்போ வர மசாலா படத்துக்கும், என் பாட்டி எனக்கு சொன்ன Bed time storyக்கும் பெரிய வித்யாசம் இல்லன்னு எனக்கு தோணுது. உங்களுக்கு எப்படி?????

The books I Read

I wanted to post a blog but I was not sure what to write. After thinking a lot I chose to write about my reading habit. I am not a professional writer but just wanted to share my thoughts with you all.

Me as an individual didn't have the habit of reading books apart from my curriculum. I prefer reading my subject books (that too during exams) rather than novels or other books until I moved to Hyderabad.

After finishing my entry level training at Cognizant-Coimbatore, I have been transferred to Hyderabad. My room buddy Priyan gifted me "Five point someone" by Chetan bhagat when I was leaving from Coimbatore. 

I reached Hyderabad and joined with Raghu and Murugesh who were my college friends. Interestingly, Raghu had another Chetan's novel "3 mistakes of my life". My attention went to that book as I came across Chetan's name from the gift. 

There was no TV and internet in our flat, and due to language problem I was not feeling comfortable to wander around the city, So I chose to read "3 Mistakes of my life" during my first weekend at Hyderabad and finished it on Sunday evening. I was impressed by the way the author presented the story and it lead me to read "Five point someone" the very next weekend.

         Google told me that the author had written two more books and I decided to read them in the future. 

From these two books I got interest in reading novels and so I went to the library in my office and took Sydney Sheldon books "If tomorrow comes" and "The naked face" and finished them within 15 days.

My friend Thiagu, who is working with me, mentioned about another Chetan's novel "two states" and added that he has a copy of the book. As I was impressed by Chetan bhagat, I borrowed the book from him and finished reading it within 3 days and never returned it to him. 

At that time there was a rumor; Rajni's entiran was adapted from a sujatha's novel. While browsing about that I came across his science fiction novel "En iniya enthira". The sight of the novel's name gave me a hint about the source of the rumor.

I downloaded the ebook "En iniya entira" and its sequel "Meendum jeeno" and started to read. I felt very uncomfortable in reading the ebook, but the story with excitement and loads of twists and turns kept me going. After finishing the novels Sujatha was added to my favorite lists along with chetan bhagat and sydney sheldon.

          My interest has now turned towards tamil and I found tamilcube.com has many good novels.  I read many books available in tamilcube out of which I liked “Kurinji malar” a classic romantic melodrama by Na.Parthasarathy the most. I admired "Sila naerangalil Sila manithargal" by legendary writer Balakumaran for the optimistic portrayal of the protagonist, Ganga.

          During one of the 24 hour travel to my home town from Hyderabad, I bought “One night at the call center” by Chetan at the railway station  and finished it an hour before before I reached Madurai. I was content that I have read all the 4 novels of Chetan while reaching Madurai.

          One day on the way to office in a share auto, I saw a girl sitting next to me reading a book sincerely. I peeped what the book is, and noticed the word “chetan bhagat” on top right corner. The moment I saw my favourite author name I glanced through the lines of the book and found that it was yet another novel by him named “Revolution 2020”. I placed an order for “Revolution 2020” on flipkart.com, once I reached office that day. 

          On my next travel to Madurai I read “Manamae ne oru manthira saavi” by suki sivam. In my home I saw some thenkatchi swaminathan’s speech collection book and satyasothanai, Gandhi’s autobiography in the shelves. My mom told me that she bought those in a recent book exhibition. I took both of them with me and decided to read them later.

          Me and my friend kisore used to discuss on various topics while returning from office every day. One fine day we had a discussion turned to be a debate on Gandhi. I was talking for, and he is talking against Gandhi. Although I have great respect for Gandhi I didn’t have any valid points to support my arguments as I know nothing about his life. On that day I decided to read satyasothanai which I took from my home.

          Luckily I was travelling to Madurai that weekend, so I read satyasothanai during that trip. The very thought of reading about the leader whom I admire the most kept me centered towards the book. I read the book on my way towards Madurai and in return too without wasting any time. I felt like I have never read any book like this, even for my public examinations. The book really made a life changing impact on me. I intended to follow many principles which I admire in Gandhi. I had a feeling of fulfillment when I was on the last page of his Autobiography.

          Priyanka, my friend suggested me to read ravinder singh’s “Can love happen twice”. I placed order in flipkart.com for “I too had a love story” and its sequel “Can love happen twice”. The book was delivered the very next day and I completed the two novels within two days( saturday and sunday).

          This is the way my reading habit had progressed since 20 months and is progressing till today in Hyderabad. Thanks for reading till the end J
